Everything about Yangon International Airport totally explained}}
Yangon International Airport , located in Mingaladon, at 15 km north of downtown Yangon, is the primary international airport of Myanmar. The airport was built on a former World War II airfield in 1947 by the Calcutta Metropolitan Airports Authority. Once regarded as the best in South East Asia, the airport fell into disrepair and was for decades dilapidated and antiquated.
A modernization program launched in April 2003 has so far resulted in a new terminal and an extended 11,200 foot (3414 meter) runway. With the addition of the new terminal opened in May 2007, the airport can handle up to 5 aircraft per hour, and 2.7 million passengers a year. A new taxi way capable of handling heavier aircraft is still under construction.
The old terminal is used exclusively for domestic flights, and the new terminal handles international flights.
New terminal
The new terminal was part of a comprehensive modernization program that began in April 2003, and was put into service in May 2007.
Designed by the Airport Development Division of CPG Corporation of Singapore, the new terminal can handle 900 arriving and 900 departing passengers simultaneously. The extended runway--from 8100 ft (2467 m) to 11,200 ft (3414 m)--can finally support Boeing 747-400 aircraft. Overall design and detailing was carried out to meet IATA service standards and to comply with ICAO safety and security standards at a cost of 30 million dollars (SGD).Other notable features include:
- Separate floors for arriving and departing passengers to lessen congestion
- Automated baggage handling system, integrated check-in system
- Four air bridges, capable of handling four Boeing 747s
- Special lounges for use by government officials and business people
- Two-story parking lot with spaces for 340 vehicles.
The new terminal building is used for international flights only.
